Your new kitchen - getting a quote & terminology

When you are buying new kitchen worktops it can be a bit of a minefield navigating new terminology. In this short guide we’ll tell you what all the different items are in your kitchen so when you get a quote, you’ll know what to ask for.

Splashback

A splashback is a large piece of stone that sits behind your hob or range/cooker. It is usually 20mm and cut from the same material as your worktops. If you want the stone to span the whole wall this is also possible – we call it a ‘full height splashback’ and it looks like this:

Upstands

Upstands are 100mm strips of 20mm stone that sit at the back of your worktop against the wall. Upstands can be made higher, and as standard we take the upstand up to your windowsill behind the sink to avoid you having to tile or paint (as you can see in the photo).

Windowsills

We can make your windowsills from stone to match the rest of your kitchen. These are usually 20mm stone polished on the front edge.

Sinks

We can work with any sink because we are cutting the stone bespoke for you. This includes a Belfast, an Undermount or an Inset (drop-in).

Drainer Grooves

If you have a Belfast or Undermount sink you have the option of drainer grooves. These usually come in sets of 5, but we can do as few or as many as you like. Drainer grooves are mostly aesthetic - they are not meant to funnel the water to your sink, but instead to trap the water and stop it pouring over the side, which then allows you to wipe the surface towards the sink.

Recessed Drainer

If you want to create the look of a draining board in your quartz, we can create you a recessed drainer which sits around 5-10mm below the surface of your worktop.

Chopping boards

We can make a chopping board from the same material to match your kitchen worktops. These are great for if you want to put hot pans onto the top without worrying about damage - quartz and granite are not suitable for high temperatures as you will scorch them/cause thermic shock.
